Don’t panic about the new EU SDS, 19th October 2022

Dear Friend,

There’s a lot of concern (and marketing!) about the new EU SDS format which comes into effect on 1st January 2023, but it’s a more nuanced situation than many people realise.

For example, if you’re only selling into mainland GB, this new format SDS won’t apply to your products; and did you know that even if you create an EU format SDS with a GB address for contractual reasons, that’s not compliant with EU law?  To answer these questions, and more, we’ve created a new factsheet which summarises the current situation to the best of our knowledge:

Don't Panic About - The New EU SDS Format, 19-10-2022

Hope this is useful, and feel free to share this with anyone handling chemicals who might find it useful.

Update: 20th October 202.  In case you can’t access the links from a downloaded pdf, which may be down to your organisations security and firewall settings, or the settings on your pdf reader itself, there are two work-arounds:

  • view the pdf online and link from there (it opens in a new window)
  • or use these links here (in the same order as the factsheet)

EC 2020/878 (new EU SDS format):

UK SI 2019/758, as amended (old SDS format brought into UK law):

If you’d like to discuss any in-depth SDS issues with my colleague Alison, you can book here:

Many thanks to Peter Godfrey of CEA Research Associates for pointing out this access issue, and if you find any problems with the factsheet itself or have any comments, then please do email me on .
